HIGHLIGHTS:

Each passing year brings forth new trials and triumphs in our mission to aid vulnerable populations, and 2023 was no exception. It was a year marred by uncertainty and insecurity, particularly in Haiti, where the specter of internal displacement loomed large, with over 80% of the capital city held under the grip of gangs. Meanwhile, Guatemala witnessed the dawning of hope with elections ushering in a new President, promising to combat the rampant corruption plaguing the nation and offering a glimmer of hope to its deeply disadvantaged citizens.

In the face of these daunting challenges, HRI remained unwavering in its commitment. Amidst the chaos and turmoil, our tireless efforts touched the lives of thousands, providing solace and support to those in desperate need. In 2023 alone, we reached over 16,100 individuals, extending a helping hand through initiatives aimed at ensuring access to nutritious food, clean water, education, and sanitation among other essential services for the most vulnerable.  

In Guatemala, our school breakfast program emerged as a beacon of hope, boasting an impressive 94% attendance rate, and yielding remarkable academic achievements. This success underscores the profound impact of nourishment on educational outcomes for children and youth, reaffirming our belief in the transformative power of food.

Meanwhile, in Haiti, where danger lurked at every corner, our dedicated team displayed unparalleled courage, risking their safety day in and day out to provide aid to those in need. Even amidst the chaos and violence, no child in the orphanages we serve was left to fend for themselves without access to vital sustenance. Displaced children and women received not only essential medical care and clean water but also invaluable psychosocial support, offering a semblance of comfort and stability during their darkest hours.

Our teams on the ground continue to astound us with their boundless compassion and unwavering resolve. Their dedication to our cause serves as a testament to the indomitable human spirit and the capacity for empathy in the face of adversity. And behind every success story, stands our steadfast team in the U.S., working tirelessly to ensure that our field teams have the support and resources they need to carry out their vital work.

As I reflect on our collective achievements, I am filled with pride and gratitude. HRI is not just an organization; it is a home—a sanctuary for compassionate professionals united in their shared mission to cultivate a kinder, more humane world. Together, we are not just agents of change; we are beacons of hope, illuminating the path towards a brighter tomorrow for all.
